- The Talking Birds
Quite a long time ago, there lived two talking birds with their parents. One day when their parents were away, a villager who generally had an eye on those special birds caught them and took them away. One of the birds got away from the trap and looked for his parents. The bird, at last, arrived at a hermitage where it was welcomed and had some food. He lived joyfully.
An explorer once ran over the other bird that the villager caught. He talked very rudely to him. He was shocked to see a talking bird but at the same time was angry with his way of behaving. The explorer visited the hermitage and recognised a similar talking bird, yet this bird talked respectfully and welcomed him to remain there.
Moral: Staying in a good company gives us a good way of behaving. Bad company influences our way of behaving negatively.
- The Dog and the Bone
Once, there was a dog who wandered the streets night and day in search of food. One day, he found a big juicy bone, and he immediately grabbed it in his mouth and took it home. On his way home, he crossed a river and saw another dog with a bone in its mouth. He wanted that bone for himself, too. But as he opened his mouth, the bone he was biting fell into the river and sank. That night, he went home hungry.
Moral: If we always envy others, we’ll lose what we already have, just like the greedy dog.
- A Little Help From God
After a shipwreck, a man who was the last standing figured out how to arrive at the shore. He asked God for help. After waiting too long for God to answer his requests, he built himself a hut for his protection with destroyed bits of a shipwreck.
Every day he invested a lot of energy searching for food and looking at the skyline for God’s help. One day, when he returned from his food search, he found his little hut burnt to ashes. Losing all hope, he felt helpless and shouted out of anger, “Why God? Why do you never answer my prayers?”
After a couple of hours, a boat arrived at the shore for his rescue. The man asked the captain of the ship, “How could you track me down?” The Captain of the ship answered, “We saw your smoke signal for help.”
The man’s faith in God’s will was re-established.
Moral: Don’t lose faith since bad things are occurring to you. God has his own particular manner of working.
- Lazy John
There was a boy named John who was so lazy he couldn’t even change his clothes. One day, he saw the apple tree in their yard was full of fruits. He wanted to eat some apples, but he was too lazy to climb the tree and take the fruits. So he lay down underneath the tree and waited for the fruits to fall off. John waited until he was starving, but the apples never fell.
Moral: Laziness can get you nowhere. If you want something, you need to work hard for it.
- The Boy Who Cried Wolf
Once upon a time, there was a young shepherd boy who enjoyed playing tricks on others. One day, while he was responsible for looking after his herd of sheep, he decided to pull a prank by shouting, “wolf! wolf!” The nearby villagers, concerned for his safety, hurried to his aid.
However, when they arrived, they found no wolf, only the boy laughing at their gullibility. The following day, the boy repeated his deception, and once more, people rushed to his assistance, only to discover it was another false alarm.
On the third day, a real wolf threatened the boy’s flock and he genuinely cried out for help. Unfortunately, the villagers, having been fooled twice before, assumed it was just another trick and didn’t come to his aid. As a result, the boy lost some of his sheep to the actual wolf.
Moral: This story teaches us that if you constantly deceive and lie to others, there will come a time when no one will trust or believe you anymore.
- The Lion and the Poor Slave
There was once a slave who was treated cruelly by his master. One day, he couldn’t take it anymore and ran to the forest to escape. There, he chanced upon a lion who couldn’t walk because of the thorn in its paw. Although scared, the slave mustered his courage and took out the thorn in the lion’s paw. When the lion was finally free of the thorn, he ran into the forest and didn’t harm the slave.
Sometime later, the slave was caught by his master along with some animals in the forest. The master then ordered the slave to be thrown into the lion’s den. When the slave saw the lion, he recognized it as the lion he helped in the forest. The slave was able to escape the den unharmed, and he freed all the other animals.
Moral: The good you did will always have a way of returning to you. So do good deeds and be kind to others, and the world will be kind to you.
- The Elephant and the Ants
There was once a proud elephant who constantly bullied smaller animals. He would go to the anthill near his home and spray water at the ants. The ants, with their size, could do nothing but cry. The elephant just laughed and threatened the ants that he would crush them to death. One day, the ants had enough and decided to teach the elephant a lesson. They went straight into the elephant’s trunk and started biting him. The elephant could only howl in pain. He realized his mistake and apologized to the ants and all the animals he bullied.
Moral: Be humble and treat everyone with kindness. If you think you’re stronger than others, use your strength to protect them instead of harming them.
- A Glass of Milk
There was a poor boy who would sell newspapers to pay for school. One day, he was ravenous and decided to ask for food at the next house he visited. Several people denied him food. However, a girl at one house offered him a glass of milk. She refused to take payment for it. After many years, this girl fell sick. No doctor wanted to help her. She decided to go to the best doctor in the town. The doctor spent months treating her, though she could not afford the service. When she received the hospital bill, it read ‘Paid in full, with a glass of milk.’
Moral: Good deeds are always rewarded.
