Leo Tolstoy was a great writer. He was a Russian. Tolstoy was a peace-loving person. He wrote many good stories. There is a valuable moral in each story. Some of his stories are logs. And some of his stories are short. The following is one of his stories. It is written for you in simple English.
It was rainy season in Russia. Rain water was flowing on the road in a village in Russia. The rain had stopped some time ago. Two little girls were playing in the water on the road. It was festival time. They were wearing new frocks. Malasha was the younger of two little girls. Akulya was a big girl.
Malasha stomped her foot in the water. It was a little muddy. Muddy water sprang up. It fell on Akulya’s new frock. Akulya was just rubbing the soil. At that time Akulya’s mother was going on the same route. She looked at her daughter’s dress. He scolded his daughter.
She asked, “How could you get your new dress so dirty?”
Akulya said, “Malasha sprinkled water on me, mother.”
Akulya’s mother caught hold of Malasha. He slapped Malasha two-three times on the back. Malasha started crying loudly. Malasha’s house was nearby. Malasha’s mother heard her daughter Malasha crying. She came out quickly.
“why are you crying?” his mother asked.

Malasha said, “Akulya’s mother beat me on the back.”
Malasha’s mother became angry and went to Akulya’s mother. Malasha’s mother abuses Akulya’s mother. Soon they started fighting loudly. They called each other’s names. His shouting continued.
Soon other women also joined them. Some people supported Akulya’s mother. Some supported Malasha’s mother. Both the fighting groups became bigger and bigger. Men also joined the fight. The fight became never-ending.
Just then Akulya’s grandmother came out of the house. He told men and women not to fight. “It is festival time. People should not fight,” he told them.
No one listened to him. No one cared about what he said. Meanwhile Malasha and Akulya forgot about their quarrel. They became friends again. They moved away from the fighting crowd. He started sailing the paper boat in the flowing water. Now the old woman said to the fighting groups.
“Look at the children. They have forgotten their quarrel. He has started playing again. They have become friends again. But you men and women still keep fighting. Aren’t you ashamed of your tendencies?”
Men and women looked at the little girls. He felt ashamed. They returned to their home silently.
Moral story:- Children forget and forgive very easily. The elders learned this lesson from the little girls.
