Krishna Janmashtami

Story Of Lord Krishna’s Birth

Krishna Janmashtami is related to the era of King Kansa. Long ago, Kansa was the king of Mathura. He was a cousin of sister Devaki. He loved his sister from the deep heart and never let her feel sad.

He attended his sister’s wedding wholeheartedly and enjoyed. Once he was going to his sister’s in-laws house. Then he got a warning from a voice hidden in the sky that “Kansa, the sister you are loving so much will one day cause your death. The eighth child of Devaki and Vasudev will kill you.

As soon as, he got the warning, he ordered his soldiers to put his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudev in prison. He started behaving cruelly with all the people of Mathura.

He declared that “I will kill all the children of my sister, to get my killer out of the way”. His sister gave birth to her first child, then second, third and then seventh who were killed one by one by Kansa.

Later Devaki got pregnant with her eighth child i.e. Krishna (the incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Lord Krishna was born on Ashtami (eighth day) in the month of Shravan at midnight in Dwaparyuga. From that day onwards, people started celebrating the festival of Krishna Janmashtami or Krishnashtami on the same day.

When Lord Shri Krishna was born in the new earth, a miracle happened, the prison doors opened automatically, the guards fell asleep and a hidden voice told Vasudeva about the way to save Krishna. Vasudeva took Krishna in a small basket and took him across a big river in the dark midnight to his friend Nanda in Gokul.

They crossed a rainy night where Sheshnag helped them. They exchanged their son with the girl of their friend Yashoda and Nand Baba and returned to Kansa’s prison. All the doors were closed and a message was sent to Kansa that Devaki had given birth to a girl.

Kansa came and tried to kill that girl by throwing her down, at that time that girl disappeared from Kansa’s hands and appeared in the sky in her real form as Bijli Kanya and warned and said Hey fool Kansa your killer is growing in a very safe place and whenever your time is over, he will kill you.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Bal Krishna was growing slowly in Gokul in the safe hands of Yashoda and Nanda. Later he ended all the cruelty of Kansa and freed his parents from Kansa’s prison. Gokulwasi were very happy with the various mischievous leelas of Krishna. People living in Gokul celebrate this festival as Gokulashtami.
