Today is also the birthday of our former Vice-President and President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, in whose memory we all celebrate Teacher’s Day. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan has also said that ‘the whole world is a school, where we learn something new or the other. Our teachers not only teach us, but also make us understand the difference between good and bad.’ This statement by him tells us that how important it is to have teachers in our lives. And how fortunate we are that we have learned so much from our teachers, are still learning and will continue to learn like this in the future.

Now I would like to tell you when and how did Teacher’s Day start in our country? Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the second President of India on 13 May 1962. In the same year, on the occasion of his birthday, on 5th September, some of his colleagues and students asked Radhakrishnan to celebrate his birthday. So Rashtrapati ji told him that if you will celebrate my birthday as teacher’s day to honor teachers, then I will be very proud of all of you. Everyone respected this noble idea of President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and decided to celebrate Teachers’ Day every year on 5th September.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was also a great teacher, who started Teachers’ Day to give due respect to the teachers. With the beginning of Teacher’s Day, he told us the importance of teachers in our lives. The amount of gratitude we show to our teachers for making our life successful is less. Saint Kabirdas ji has also said in one of his couplets that “I will do all the work on the earth, I will write everything on Vanarai. May I swim across the seven seas, may Guru’s qualities not be written down.” In this couplet, Kabirdas ji has said that Guru is the best and greatest. If we collect all the papers on earth, collect the wood of all the trees in the forest and make ink from the water of all the oceans, still that paper and ink will be insufficient to write the glory of the Guru. It is not only difficult but impossible to describe the glory of Guru in words. Such is the glory of the Guru. That is why the best and true way to express our gratitude to teachers is to always respect them.

We get life from our parents, but no one can tell us better than a teacher how to live that life. After our parents, the full credit of our success goes to our teachers because along with our hard work, it is also the result of their hard work. Teachers are the lamp of our lives who burn themselves and fill the light of knowledge by dispelling the darkness of ignorance spread around us.
