What is a pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun.

  • Rohit has a balloon.
  • He has a balloon
  • Rohit has a balloon.
  • He has a balloon.

Examples – He, she, they, it, we, you, etc.

Types Of Pronouns

Similar to nouns, pronouns can be singular or plural, and they can either be the subject or the object too. Let us look into the different types of pronouns.

Pronouns Worksheets for 9 Grade

Reciprocal Pronoun

A reciprocal pronoun is used to express a mutual action or a relationship. The reciprocal pronouns include ‘each other’ and ‘one another’. When the antecedent is two things use each other as the reciprocal pronoun. However, when the antecedent is three or more things, use one another.
e.g.

  • Tommy and Jane hate each other.
  • Our two dogs and your cat love one another.
  • Chapter Practice

Distributive Pronouns

Each, either and neither are called distributive pronouns because they refer to persons or things one at a time. Note that a distributive pronoun is always singular and as such it should be followed by a singular noun and verb.
Examples:

  • Each boy was given a prize.
  • Either road leads to the railway station.
  • Neither accusation is true
  • Each new day is different. (NOT Each new days are different.)
  • Either girl can do that. (NOT Either girls can do that.)
  • Neither answer is correct. (NOT Neither answers is correct.) (NOT Neither answers are correct.)
  • Each of, neither ©f and either of are followed by plural nouns and singular verbs. Each of the answers are correct. (NOT Each of the answer is correct.)
  • Neither of the girls can do that. (NOT Either of the girl can do that.)
  • Either and neither should be used only when talking about two persons or things.
  • When more than two persons or things are spoken of, any, no one or none should be used.
  • None of the three answers is correct. (NOT Neither of the three answers is correct.)
  • We invited several friends, but none came. (NOT … but neither came.)
  • You can take any of the three shirts. (NOT You can take either of the three shirts.)

Other Types of Pronoun

Apart from personal pronouns, there are many other types, which we are briefly describing here.

Pronoun TypeMembers of the SubclassExample
Possessivemine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirsThe white car is mine
Reflexivemyself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, oneself, ourselves, yourselves, themselvesHe injured himself playing football
Reciprocaleach other, one anotherThey really hate each other
Relativethat, which, who, whose, whom, where, whenThe book that you gave me was really boring
Demonstrativethis, that, these, thoseThis is a new car
Interrogativewho, what, why, where, when, whateverWhat did he say to you?
Indefiniteanything, anybody, anyone, something, somebody, someone, nothing, nobody, none, no oneThere’s something in my shoe

Case and number distinctions do not apply to all pronoun types. In fact, they only apply to personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, and reflexive pronouns. It is only in these types that gender differences are shown (personal his/her, possessive his/her, mirrored self). All other types are immutable in nature.

Many of the pronouns listed above also belong to another word class – the determiner class. They are pronouns when they come independently, that is, they are not followed by a noun, as in This is a new car. But when a noun follows them – This car is new – they are determiners. We’ll look at determinants in the next section.

A major difference between pronouns and nouns in general is that pronouns do not take or a/an before themselves. Furthermore, pronouns do not take adjectives before themselves, except in very restricted constructions involving certain indefinite pronouns (something, a certain person).

Conditional clauses are of the following types:

In the if-clause, the simple present tense is used when referring to a possible or probable situation in the future. The future tense is used in the main clause:

  • If it rains, we will go inside the house.
  • The main clause usually has the form: shall/shall/may/can/should + first form of the verb:
  • If she works hard, she will pass.
  • I will help you if you request me.
  • If you need a pen, you can take mine.
  • If you want to score good marks then you have to work harder.

In an if-clause referring to a situation whose result is always the same, the simple present is used. The simple tense is also used in the main clause:

  • If the engine gets too hot, it starts to smoke.
  • if you heat ice, it melts.
  • If you boil water, it evaporates.
  • If you hit a child, he cries.

If a conditional clause refers to an unexpected or impossible situation in the present or future, the simple past tense is used. In main clauses, we use ‘should’, ‘can’, ‘might’, ‘shall’ etc. + first form of the verb:

  • If you run fast, you can catch the train.
  • If I win the lottery, I will buy a car.
  • If I knew the answer, I would tell you.
  • What would you do if a thief broke into your house?
  • If I were rich, I would open a school for the poor.

If a conditional clause refers to something that did not happen in the past, the past perfect tense is used. In the main clause, we will use the third form of the verb shall/should/may/might:

  • If she had worked hard, she would have passed.
  • (i.e. she didn’t study hard enough, so she didn’t pass).
  • If he had left early, he might have caught the train.
  • If he had told me, I would have received him at the railway station.
  • But when the main clause is about the present, ‘have’ is used without ‘shall’, ‘could’, ‘might’, etc.:

If you had followed my advice, we would have been home by now.

If a conditional clause refers to an unlikely state in the future, ‘the to’ must be followed by an infinitive, sometimes used instead of the simple past tense:

  • If you want to see him, tell him to come here.
  • If she dies before you then who will take care of your children?
  • Call me if you need any help.

‘If only’ is used to express a wish with reference to present or future time:

  • i wish i was rich
  • I wish I could swim
  • i wish i knew

‘If only’ is used to express the wish that past events were different:

  • I wish he had remembered to post that letter.
  • I wish I had met him.
  • I wish he had told the truth.

Adverbial Clauses of Time:

Adverbial clauses of time are used to indicate that something happens by referring to a period of time or to some other event. Subordinating conjunctions like after, before, since, when, while, whenever, until, etc. are used.

  • I arrived after it started.
  • The patient had already died before the arrival of the doctor.
  • I haven’t seen her since she was ten years old.
  • His father died when he was young.
  • Someone called while you were out.
  • Whenever I smiled, she also smiled back.
  • I will wait here till you return.
  • As I was leaving, the phone rang.
